My copper etching prints are made using a rare 18th-century technique that I have personally revived in our small artisan studio in Malta. This method — formally known as copper relief etching — combines acid etching to prepare the copper plate with a relief inking approach for hand-press printing. First developed in late 1700s England by William Blake, it nearly vanished due to the exceptional skill it requires. By bringing it back to life through careful experimentation, I aim to preserve its legacy. Though the original term may sound technical, I simply call them copper etchings — a name that honors both the tradition and the care behind each hand-pressed print.
Every copper etching print I create begins with a hand-drawn artwork, carefully transferred onto a prepared copper plate. I etch the image using acid, ink the plate by hand, and then press each print using traditional tools. While the process is rooted in history, I incorporate just enough modern precision to ensure clarity and consistency. My aim is to keep this centuries-old printmaking art alive — producing small-batch, limited edition works that reflect both skill and spirit.
Read moreCopper etching has deep historical roots, with early printmaking traditions dating back over a thousand years — from ancient techniques in Asia to the revolutionary work of William Blake in 18th-century England. While my own process is based on Blake’s relief etching method, I draw inspiration from the long legacy of hand-pressed image making. By practicing this rare technique in our artisan studio in Malta, I aim to keep that spirit alive — one print at a time.
