Cactus Jewellery

Cactus Fibre Jewellery Care

Our cactus fibre jewellery is carefully strengthened through a multi-step process to make it sturdy and durable. However, because of its naturally delicate, lace-like structure, it should be treated with care. With a little attention, you can enjoy your unique piece of nature-inspired jewellery for many years.

Wearing tips

  • Avoid wearing your cactus jewellery in the bath, shower, swimming pool, or during exercise and sleep.
  • Do not expose it to rain or excessive moisture.
  • If you purchased dangle earrings and have long hair, we recommend wearing them with tied-up hairstyles to prevent tangling with the intricate fibre weave.

Storage

  • Store your jewellery in a dry place, ideally in a closed jewellery box or in the original packaging we provide.
  • If you live in a humid environment, keeping it sealed in a box is especially important to preserve the fibre’s strength.

Metal parts

  • Some cactus jewellery pieces feature solid brass or copper elements (indicated on the product tag). For these parts, please also follow the care instructions for copper and brass jewellery below.

Travelling

  • When transporting your jewellery (for example, on holiday), we recommend placing it in the original box for safe protection.

Earring safety

  • For certain earrings, we include a pair of rubber earring backs (you’ll find them either on the hooks or under the black foam in the box). Because these earrings are very lightweight, using the rubber backs helps prevent accidental loss.

Quick Care Summary – Cactus Fibre Jewellery

  • Handle gently – Cactus fibre is strengthened but naturally delicate.
  • Avoid moisture – Do not wear in the shower, pool, rain, during exercise, or while sleeping.
  • Hairstyle tip – For dangle earrings and long hair, wear with tied-up hairstyles to prevent tangling.
  • Store safely – Keep in a dry place, ideally in the box provided. In humid environments, always store in a sealed jewellery box or container.

Sea glass jewellery

Caring for Sea Glass Jewellery

Our sea glass jewellery combines natural ocean-tumbled glass with metals such as raw copper, brass, stainless steel, or non-tarnish alloys. Care depends on the type of metal used, as well as any finishes applied. You can always check the product card included with your jewellery for exact details.

Basic Care Tips

  • While sea glass itself is waterproof, the metal parts may tarnish depending on the material.
    • Copper & Brass – More sensitive to humidity and chemicals; tarnish over time.
    • Stainless Steel – Much more resistant to tarnish and everyday wear. Only requires light cleaning.
  • Avoid wearing your jewellery in the bath, shower, swimming pool, or during exercise and sleep (recommended for all metals, however stainless steel can tolerate water).
  • Do not expose to perfumes, lotions, or household chemicals, as they accelerate tarnishing (especially for copper and brass).
  • Handle with care: sea glass is durable but can still break if struck against hard objects or dropped.
  • Earring hooks and hoops are hardened, but thin by nature. Avoid stretching or bending them.
  • Store in a dry place. In humid environments, keep your jewellery in a closed box or the packaging we provide.

The Beauty of Natural Sea Glass

We leave all sea glass pieces completely unaltered — just as the waves shaped them.

  • When wet, sea glass looks shiny. Once dry, it becomes matte and “frosted.”
  • If you prefer a shinier look, rub a tiny drop of baby oil or coconut oil onto the glass (avoid the metal parts). This will give it the appearance of being fresh from the sea.

Cleaning the Sea Glass

  • Wipe with a soft dry or slightly damp cloth.
  • For deeper cleaning, use mild soap (like dishwashing liquid), lukewarm water, and a soft-bristle brush (such as a toothbrush). Rinse well and pat dry with a soft cloth or paper towel.
  • Do not store until completely dry.
  • Do not use ultrasonic jewellery cleaners.

Cleaning the Metal Parts

Check your product card for the exact materials and finish:

  • Copper & Brass
    • Wax-sealed patina – Gently wipe with a dry cloth. To refresh the wax shine, polish the waxed areas lightly as you would leather shoes.
    • Varnish-sealed patina or other metal parts – Wipe with a dry or slightly damp soft cloth. No further treatment is required.
    • Unsealed patina – Best left alone to age naturally. If necessary, gently wipe dirt with a soft cloth or brush.
    • Raw copper/brass – Can be washed with lukewarm soapy water and a soft brush, then dried thoroughly. Raw metals naturally darken with time. To restore brightness, follow our full copper & brass jewellery care guide below.
  • Stainless Steel
    • Clean with a soft damp cloth or mild soapy water, then rinse and dry thoroughly.
    • Stainless steel is resistant to tarnish, so it does not require polishing or special anti-tarnish strips.
    • Avoid abrasive cleaners to keep its smooth surface scratch-free.

Quick Care Summary – Sea Glass Jewellery

  • Avoid moisture & chemicals – Do not wear while bathing, swimming, exercising, or sleeping. Keep away from lotions, perfumes, and household chemicals.
  • Handle with care – Sea glass is strong but may chip or break if dropped or hit against hard surfaces.
  • Earring hooks and hoops – Hardened but thin; avoid bending or stretching.
  • Storage – Keep in a dry, closed box or the packaging provided.

Sea Glass:

  • Naturally matte and frosted when dry.
  • For a wet, shiny look, rub a tiny drop of baby or coconut oil on the glass (avoid the metal).
  • Clean with a soft dry/damp cloth, or mild soapy water and a soft brush. Rinse and dry thoroughly.
  • No ultrasonic cleaning.

Metal Parts:

  • Copper & Brass – Sensitive to tarnish. Care depends on finish:
    • Sealed patina: wipe gently only.
    • Raw metal: follow the Copper & Brass Care Guide for polishing.
  • Stainless Steel – Tarnish-resistant. Clean with a damp cloth or mild soapy water. Avoid abrasives.

We hope you will enjoy wearing your unique sea glass jewellery — a timeless treasure shaped by the sea and finished in our artisan studio — for many years to come.

Copper or Brass jewellery

Caring for Handmade Copper & Brass Jewellery

Copper is the oldest natural metal used by humankind — long valued for tools, utensils, and jewellery. Its warm tones and natural charm make it a timeless choice, and with proper care, your copper or brass jewellery will stay beautiful for many years.

To help you with this, we include a small anti-tarnish strip in your jewellery box.
Keep it inside the packaging with your jewellery to slow down oxidation. Replace the strip every 6–12 months for best results.

Basic Care Tips

  • Store your jewellery in a dry, closed box or a sealable plastic bag to slow down oxidation. You can use the jewellery box provided with your purchase.
  • After wearing, always make sure the piece is clean and completely dry (free from moisture, lotions, or perfumes) before storage.
  • Avoid wearing copper or brass jewellery while swimming, bathing, sunbathing, gardening, exercising, or sleeping.
  • Keep away from chemicals, detergents, solvents, lotions, and perfumes.
  • Do not expose your jewellery to extreme heat (such as flames or gas cookers), which can soften the metal and cause discoloration.
  • For light cleaning, use a soft damp cloth with mild soapy water. Rinse and dry thoroughly. Avoid abrasives that could scratch the surface. Avoid applying strong force without properly supporting the piece from underneath with your other hand.

Colour & Patina

  • Natural copper has a warm reddish colour, while brass has a golden-yellow tone.
  • In our artisan studio, we sometimes keep these natural colours, and other times we create patinas ranging from deep blacks to iridescent blues and greens.
  • Some patinas are sealed with varnish or wax to extend their life. If your piece has a sealed patina (indicated on the product page or tag), follow the same basic care tips above. Please do not use liquid, paste, or acid-based cleaners on sealed patina surfaces, as these may damage the protective layer. The raw copper or brass parts of your jewellery can still be safely polished with the jewellery polishing cloth provided.
  • Unsealed flame patina is especially delicate: its shimmering colours naturally fade over months, and any protective coating would immediately alter them. These colours are temporary by nature and should be enjoyed as part of the jewellery’s living character.

Natural Ageing

  • Over time, raw copper and brass darken naturally, sometimes developing a greenish patina, other times becoming darker and darker, depending on the environment.
  • To keep your jewellery bright, polish it occasionally with the cloth provided or use simple household methods (see below).

Polishing Methods for RAW Copper & Brass

(Do not use these methods on patinated surfaces, as they will remove the patina.)

  • Jewellery polishing cloth (best for most cases) – Use the jewellery polishing cloth provided with your purchase, or another cloth designed for copper and brass. This is the easiest and safest way to remove tarnish and restore shine.
    • On intricate pieces, cloths cannot always reach every surface. Avoid rubbing too hard — excess pressure may bend and deform delicate details.
    • Do not wash polishing cloths; once they lose their effectiveness, simply replace them. However they can be used for many times, even after they turn black, before they lose their effectiveness.
  • Commercial copper/brass cleaners – Products such as Brasso or Wright’s Copper Cream are formulated specifically for these metals. They can safely clean areas that polishing cloths cannot reach. Always follow the instructions on the packaging and rinse/dry thoroughly before wearing or storing your jewellery.
  • Lemon juice & salt (home method) – Effective for brightening raw metal. Apply lemon juice, sprinkle a small amount of fine salt, rub very gently with your fingertips or a soft cloth (or a toothbrush), rinse well, and dry thoroughly. Finish with a light rub using a jewellery polishing cloth to restore the warm glow.
  • Ketchup (gentle alternative) – Apply a thin layer, leave for 10–15 minutes, then rinse and dry. Works more slowly but is mild and less likely to harm surfaces. Finish with a jewellery polishing cloth for best results.
  • Vinegar & salt soak (quick but strong) – Mix 50 ml vinegar with ½ tsp salt. Briefly soak your jewellery (less than 1 minute), rinse well, then neutralise in a baking soda solution (100 ml water + ½ tsp baking soda) to stop the reaction. Dry thoroughly before storing. Afterwards, polish gently with a jewellery polishing cloth to bring back the deep, warm tone of the copper or brass.

Skin Discolouration

  • Sometimes copper or brass can leave green marks on the skin. This is harmless and caused by natural oxidation when exposed to sweat or cosmetics.
  • Some even consider this beneficial, as the body absorbs tiny amounts of copper, an essential trace element. Simply wash the marks off with soap and water.
  • To minimise discolouration, avoid wearing raw copper or brass on very hot days, during heavy activity, or on those parts of skin where lotions or perfumes were applied.

Thin & Delicate Parts

  • Some pieces use fine metal wires (like ear hooks), or other delicate thin metals as part of the design. These are work-hardened but still naturally bendable. Handle gently and avoid applying force on these areas.
  • If they bend, reshape carefully with your fingers or ask a jeweller for help.

Quick Care Summary – Copper & Brass Jewellery

  • Avoid moisture & chemicals – Do not wear while bathing, swimming, exercising, or applying lotions/perfume.
  • Store safely – Keep in a dry, closed box or the packaging provided to slow down tarnish.
  • Light cleaning – Wipe gently with a soft, damp cloth, then dry thoroughly.
  • Polishing – Use the polishing cloth provided for best results. On intricate designs, polish gently and avoid excess pressure.
  • Deeper cleaning (raw metal only) – For stubborn tarnish, you may use commercial copper/brass cleaners or mild home remedies (lemon + salt, vinegar + salt, ketchup). Always finish with a jewellery polishing cloth to restore warmth and shine.
  • Patina pieces – Do not use cleaning methods on patinated surfaces, as this will remove the finish. Enjoy their natural ageing.
  • Skin marks – A harmless green tint may appear on skin in contact with raw copper or brass. Simply wash off with soap and water.

We hope this detailed guide helps you take the best care of your copper and brass jewellery, so you can enjoy its natural beauty and timeless charm for years to come.
