‘Connections’ Necklace – Brass and Cactus Fibre Artisan Necklace

This exceptional piece was created as an entry for Premju Ġieħ l-Artiġjanat Malti 2023, Malta’s National Award for Excellence in Artisanship, and was chosen to be part of an exhibition — a testament to its originality and craftsmanship.

The necklace unites metal, fibre, and colour in a single landscape of texture. The brass base, shaped like gentle sea waves, holds a sculptural panel of cactus fibre — its natural structure resembling Gozo’s iconic salt pans, carved over centuries by the meeting of sea, stone, and human hands.

The fibre surface — after a several step preparation process — was gilded with brass leaf, then layered with blue and green tones through a carefully controlled patina process, and finally enriched with hand-painted acrylic shades. Sealed with zapon lacquer, the resulting finish evokes the look of seawater shimmering in rocky basins under winter light.

Handcrafted entirely in our artisan studio in Malta, this necklace embodies the essence of our mission — to celebrate nature’s rhythms and remind us of our place within them.
